The Clarity of Light

Rising early, long before her vacationing family awoke, Melanie ambled to the dock at the end of the pier, a short walk from their lakeside cabin. Sitting at the edge, she suspended her feet in the cool water and watched the sun rise. Arriving late the evening before, she and her children had looked across to the other side, isolating a series of lights, unable to determine what it was they were seeing. As darkness gave way to dawn, a lodge and fishing pier came into view. The presence of the light clarified it all.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Upon those who lived in a land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing. They rejoice before you as people rejoice at harvest, as they exult when dividing the spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, the rod of their taskmaster, you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.”
