Our Greatest Riches

finance march18The email message was completely unexpected. Though Rob had long planned to build a website based on a brand he’d registered years ago, he’d never followed through. Someone else saw the potential in the URL and offered to purchase it from him, evaluating its latent value much more highly than Rob could have imagined. The name, the accompanying URL, and the potential were worth a great deal to someone else. Who knew? A furnished model home comes complete with inherent value. A custom truck fresh from the showroom and a pile of cash do, too. We also value life itself, love, devotion, mercy, grace and forgiveness just as highly. If not, we certainly should.

“God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved), raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God. It is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them” (Ephesians 2:4-10).

Some might read such a passage, and—knowing Paul chose a modest lifestyle in following Jesus—say it was easier for him to align with God’s riches than with our own, however great or humble. The Apostle’s own testimony tells a story of success and esteem. “Circumcised on the eighth day, of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrew parentage, in observance of the law a Pharisee. But whatever gains I had, these I have come to consider a loss because of Christ. More than that, I even consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:5, 8).

At best, any attempt to choose between earthly and heavenly riches is a challenge. Knowing both firsthand, St. Paul advocated his wise preference. “For Christ’s sake I have accepted the loss of all things, and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ, and be found in him, not having any righteousness of my own based on the law but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God, depending on faith” (Philippians 3:8b-9). In Christ, we are granted life, by faith in the work completed on our behalf—our greatest riches, and God’s greatest gift.

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
