Choosing Wisely

finance jan2018The St. Stanislaus girls’ volleyball team is a powerhouse. For ease in facilitating daily practices, the school leaves the nets up inside the old campus field house throughout the season. One morning, Coach Heinz, the boys’ physical education instructor, introduced a class of young men to the rigors of the sport, choosing teams, and outlining rules and strategy. He tried to combine familiar student athletes he coached with those he didn’t really know well. Nonetheless, one of the teams included more proven athletes than the other. And yet, they lost. Badly. Feeling they had something to prove, the victors played better as a unit. Coach Heinz had his favorites and made choices accordingly. His players learned a powerful lesson. So did he.

We make similar choices all the time. Even when we have ample information, our preferences and prejudices often show. We might strive to follow God’s example. “Peter proceeded to speak and said, ‘In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. You know the word that he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John the Baptist preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him” (Acts 10:34-38).

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
