Gifts Unwrapped

finance Oct2019Do you begin your holiday shopping early? If so, you may have a few gifts set aside already, tangible evidence of your regard for others. Some gifts, of course, can’t be purchased online or in a favorite retail outlet. They aren’t for sale. We couldn’t begin to know how best to wrap them, and they’re the last things we’d want to hide or delay presenting to someone else. God presents gifts like that to each of us, and the most fundamental of them highlight the Apostle Paul’s message to Timothy in his second letter to him.

“I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us” (2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14).

God’s gifts to us are many. Lives of meaning and liberty, purpose and hope. Families and friends, neighbors and mission to others. Our Catholic faith and the faith communities in which we worship, learn, serve and grow spiritually. Vital ministries and messages of love and grace. The promise of the Gospel and the salvation assured to all those who rest in Jesus. Our Lord, who gave himself for us and the indwelling Holy Spirit. The legacy of the Church and our call as parts of all God continues to do in our day. Forgiveness and mercy. And love.

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
