Solid Walls, Sure Foundation

Service projects, like those available to parish youth groups through organizations of which Habitat for Humanity is an established example, can be incredibly fulfilling experiences for students and their sponsors. A few minutes of training is enough for those called to clean a job site. A few minutes more can prepare teenagers to scrape and ready exterior surfaces for a coat of paint. More still is required of those who’ll take brush in hand and paint. To frame a wall, install lighting fixtures, or shingle a roof, professionals will welcome assistance, but those tasks are reserved for practiced hands. All of the work takes place with a solid foundation assured. All of the work—that completed by professionals, as well as that performed by youth—is possible because of the foundation on which they all stand.

“So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”

This devotional article is taken from the Total Stewardship curriculum of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, one of dozens of devotional pieces that support resources designed for the Stewardship of Prayer, the Stewardship of Ministry, and the Stewardship of Finance. The material purposefully aligns with the annual Catholic liturgy, the Third Edition of the Roman Missal and the Revised Edition of the New American Bible. We invite you to contact us for more information concerning ways the Total Stewardship curriculum might be used to serve your parish and your parishioners.

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
