A Woman’s Guide to Estate Planning

A 4-Point Plan for Your Future Success

Please take a moment to consider this all-too-familiar story. The month after Anne turned 30, her dear mother passed away. In the weeks that followed the funeral, Anne discovered that her Mom—a widow—had failed to draft a plan for her estate. In the absence of a plan, state law determined how her mother’s assets would be distributed.

According to a study by the National Center for Women and Retirement, nearly 90% of surveyed women will make their own significant financial decisions at some point in their lives. Whether you are single, divorced or widowed, fashioning an effective estate plan is part of thoughtful, prudent independence.

Steeped in Heavenly Peace

finance may2019In the Upper Room, Jesus led the disciples in the service we know commonly as the Last Supper, and he addressed them in an extended discourse that covers multiple chapters of John’s Gospel. On a night of anxious anticipation, he encouraged them. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. I go and prepare a place for you,” he said. “I am the way and the truth and the life,” he taught. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” And he spoke of a very special gift, the gift of peace.

“ ‘Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid’ ” (John 14:23b-27).

God loves with an unselfish, unconditional devotion more deeply than we know. His grace, his mercy and his kindness are unfathomable, yet eternally sure. We trust God’s gift of peace to be distinctive, quite other than anything the world has to offer. The gift of peace is a present that money simply cannot buy—not material but spiritual and, in type, unlike the manner the world employs in giving. God gives unsparingly, absolutely, sacrificially and forever. In Christ, God grants us the gift of peace today and offers life to come. Only God can do either.
