God, Our Refuge and Our Deliverer

A study of ancient civilizations will produce countless numbers of people whose conduct was their undoing. They weren’t conquered, disease didn’t decimate their populations, and they didn’t leave their homes for better lives elsewhere. According to the Scriptures, a few became enemies of others because they became enemies of God. “You have made the city a heap, the fortified city a ruin; the castle of the insolent, a city no more, not ever to be rebuilt.”

The God of old is gracious however, longsuffering and generous to all who call on him. “For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the need in their distress and shelter from the rain. On this mountain the Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples. Indeed, this is our God; we looked to him, and he saved us! This is the Lord to whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he saved us!”

This devotional article is taken from the Total Stewardship curriculum of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, one of dozens of devotional pieces that support resources designed for the Stewardship of Prayer, the Stewardship of Ministry, and the Stewardship of Finance. The material purposefully aligns with the annual Catholic liturgy, the Third Edition of the Roman Missal and the Revised Edition of the New American Bible. We invite you to contact us for more information concerning ways the Total Stewardship curriculum might be used to serve your parish and your parishioners.

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
