Relative Prosperity

What does it mean to be prosperous? Does it mean your salary totals six figures? More than that? Or, would your relative prosperity be more a function of ‘accumulated’ wealth? The goods and possessions you’ve acquired over the years form an impressive inventory; therefore, you are prosperous. Concerned with poverty and wealth distribution, a number of organizations monitor income levels all over the world, and one group offers these very revealing statistics.

That six-figure income? Very few members of the global community can boast of prosperity, if $100,000 or more is an appropriate definition, for only one percent of the world’s population makes even half that in a year. That’s right. Workers that average at least $50,000 in yearly income comprise the top 1% of the world’s total population. Thirty times their number actually make $500 or less a year! By the accepted standards of Western culture it is stunning, but well over 80% of the world’s population make less than $2,500 per year.

Relative to the rest of the world then, the vast majority of Americans are blessed with abundant prosperity. And, the writer of Psalm 85 speaks of prosperity as a blessing from the Lord. “Near indeed is salvation for the loyal; prosperity will fill our land. The Lord will surely grant abundance; our land will yield its increase. Prosperity will march before the Lord, and good fortune will follow behind.” An informed comparison should convince anyone in any of our parish churches that we are truly blessed. The Scriptures remind us that whatever we earn, whatever we produce, whatever we have—these are gifts from God. It is humbling to realize how much He has chosen to bless us.

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
