Your Will: It’s More Than Legalese

It’s one of the most important legal documents you’ll ever create; a will dictates how you want your assets distributed after you’re gone. But beyond legalities, a will is a reflection of your life. It reveals who and what mattered most to you, and it’s the final gesture by which you’ll be remembered.

Listening Ears, Trained Tongue

Listening Ears, Trained Tongue

“The Lord has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear.” In our culture, there is almost no silence and so much noise, the voice of the Almighty is all but drowned out. Elite automakers illustrate their quiet ride with video of a driver raising electric windows and the growing silence within the car. Unfortunately, they follow this inviting picture with news of the latest Sirius or XM radio package, noting how well an iPod will interface with the car’s technology, before offering a sample of the concert sound that fills the interior with soaring treble and punishing bass. We have a great need for meaningful engagement, but little time for other people, maybe less for God. Were he to speak to us through another, would we even know?

Isaiah writes that ears are for hearing from God, and the tongue is for sharing with others the wisdom the Lord imparts. That’s different. God’s wisdom can certainly encourage us, but the prophet suggests such wisdom might, most significantly, be available for the encouragement of another. That would be a far different practice for most people. So, what might we learn here? Begin the morning, listening to the word of the Lord, at Mass, from Scripture, from the wise counsel of his servants, in his creation. And train not only your ears, but also train your tongue to be a conduit for the Lord’s wisdom that you might also “speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.”

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
