Increase the Valuable

In a recent magazine article, one author wrote of her children and their fondness for electronic gifts. Over the years, she’s found them inevitably expensive and soon obsolete. Last year’s gadgets fill drawers and boxes, replaced by this year’s preferences. To a degree, it’s equally true for adults, and discovering a gift of lasting value can be a rare find. The writer made such a discovery, however, when she purchased a twenty-dollar tree swing for her family. Her children played on the swing that year and, regardless of the weather, have spent hours enjoying the inexpensive gift every season, every year since. It was a true investment in their quality of life. Good investments are like that. Their value increases, plus many things of lasting value aren’t really things at all.

“I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love my increase ever more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.”

St. Paul understood life is fragile and much of it is weighted by decay and rust, eroding and deteriorating around us. He also knew the promise of Christ Jesus is life affirming, and the truth of the Gospel fills each life with the enduring potential of hope and joy. We find lasting value in prayer and partnership, good works, love, knowledge of God, wisdom, and the fruit of righteous living. It is possible to find a wonderful gift for ten to twenty dollars. It’s also possible to find value in riches that require neither a wallet nor a purse.

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
