For Someone You Know

You’ve heard it before. Among many others, Mark Twain noted our odd preference for work on behalf of those we don’t really know. Tom Sawyer found how easy it was to enlist kids to paint a fence that didn’t belong to them while they avoided painting their own. Well, is it sensible to allow our children to earn spending money cutting someone else’s lawn, if they avoid cutting the one at home? Sometimes, it just seems easier to serve others than those we know best, those with whom we’re emotionally involved.

We do know best those with whom we live and work. We know their wants. We know their needs. And, we certainly know what we might do on their behalf. We see the leaves that need raking. We see closets that could use a cleaning. We know of trees that could use a trim, garages that need sorting, and errands that could be coordinated and run. The person in need could very well be someone who shares your name or your address. Maybe both.

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
