Fear and the Light

A child’s world changes when the light switch is turned off. The same is true for our elderly family members. Fear and light are inversely proportional. The lights dim, and the measuring bar on the fear meter heads the other direction. Night lights help a bit. Motion detectors and security lights make a difference. Key ring lights and flashlights are welcome, but we all face circumstances in darkness and shadow with an understandable level of discomfort. Maybe shopping in the hardware store isn’t the only answer. “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom do I fear? The Lord is my life’s refuge; of whom am I afraid” (Psalm 27:1).

We face physical darkness and share with others a sense of unease. It’s reasonable and natural. But there is a greater shadow we face. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone” (Isaiah 9:1). The prophet Isaiah spoke of the spiritual need no night light or sophisticated security system can address. The Lord is himself the light that shines in all of life’s dark places. As his own, we have the privilege of sharing in that light and of sharing it with others.

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
