Bless Our Work

The fall sun was hot, blistering skin and baking earth. Every shovelful of dirt pulled at sore muscles and aching backs. Leaning on the handle, a loving father straightened and watched his sons open a path for a walkway that would connect the house and their mother’s garden. Dad whispered a prayer of thanks. The two teenagers shared Mom’s eyes, his own steady, hard-working manner, and their parents’ love for God.

“Please bless them, Lord, and bless our work.” His sentiment echoed the prayer of the patriarch Moses, “May the favor of the Lord our God be ours. Prosper the work of our hands. Prosper the work of our hands.” Hard work is healthy. And as the Lord blesses, hard work is productive and beneficial to all involved. The seasoned laborer can exact a tremendous reward for his effort. But, imagine the difference when the limbs of the expert track a path God has already established.

As recorded in a brief letter, the Apostle Paul desired the support of his co-worker Philemon, and he expressed his hope that it be offered willingly. “I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that the good you do might not be forced but voluntary.” The product of the teamwork of the Lord’s servants is almost like music, a chorus of voices and a symphony of different gifts and abilities, working together to honor the Lord and his blessing. Serving together, doing so willingly, and doing so under God’s guidance, his laborers experience a harvest. It is the work of the prosperous—the many workers who honor God and are blessed by him.

Stewardship Today is a monthly devotional newsletter designed to assist Catholics everywhere in developing a greater understanding of the role of stewardship in everyday life.
All we are, and all we possess, are gifts from God for our use and for the blessing of others. Through wise stewardship, we invest our time, our talents and our treasures to the glory of God.
